Speech for World Day for Audiovisual Heritage: Preserving Our Audiovisual Memories for Future Generations

Theme: “Our Heritage, Our Stories, Our Future”

Distinguished guests, respected colleagues, teachers, students, cultural heritage professionals, and all participants,

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

It is a great honor to welcome you to the celebration of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, observed every year on October 27. This important occasion reminds us of the value of preserving audiovisual materials as an essential part of our shared cultural heritage and collective memory.

Today, we gather not only to celebrate the achievements of audiovisual technology but also to recognize the stories, knowledge, traditions, and historical experiences preserved through photographs, films, sound recordings, radio broadcasts, television programs, and digital media.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Audiovisual heritage is more than a collection of old films, photographs, or sound recordings. It is a living record of humanity. Through these materials, we can hear the voices of previous generations, witness important historical events, understand cultural traditions, and discover how societies have changed over time.

A single photograph can preserve a moment that might otherwise be forgotten. An old film can reveal the beauty of a traditional ceremony. A historical recording can bring back the voices of leaders, artists, musicians, and ordinary people whose experiences helped shape our world.

These valuable records connect the past with the present and provide meaningful lessons for the future.

However, our audiovisual heritage faces many challenges. Physical materials such as film reels, magnetic tapes, photographs, and sound recordings can deteriorate because of age, environmental conditions, and improper storage. Meanwhile, digital materials face other risks, including technological obsolescence, data loss, and the disappearance of digital platforms and formats.

If we fail to preserve these resources today, future generations may lose access to important parts of their history.

For this reason, audiovisual preservation must become a shared responsibility. Governments, archives, libraries, museums, educational institutions, media organizations, communities, and individuals all have important roles to play in protecting this irreplaceable heritage.

Digital technology provides valuable opportunities to preserve and share audiovisual materials with wider audiences. Through digitization, professional conservation, reliable storage systems, and responsible online publication, historical records can become more accessible to researchers, students, educators, and the general public.

Nevertheless, digitization alone is not enough. We must also ensure that audiovisual materials remain authentic, properly documented, securely stored, and accessible over time. Preservation requires knowledge, commitment, collaboration, and continuous investment.

Ladies and gentlemen,

As we commemorate the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, let us also recognize the importance of local histories and cultural traditions. Every community has stories worth preserving. Every generation has experiences that deserve to be remembered. Every historical recording, when carefully preserved and properly understood, can contribute to a richer understanding of our shared humanity.

We should encourage young people to explore audiovisual archives, learn about their cultural identities, and appreciate the historical value of photographs, films, recordings, and other media. By doing so, we can inspire a new generation of archivists, historians, researchers, filmmakers, and cultural heritage advocates.

Let us also strengthen cooperation among institutions and communities to ensure that audiovisual heritage is not only preserved in archives but also shared in ways that are educational, inclusive, and meaningful.

The future of our audiovisual heritage depends on the decisions we make today. Preserving these materials means protecting the voices of the past, strengthening our understanding of the present, and providing valuable knowledge for generations yet to come.

In closing, I invite everyone to make audiovisual preservation a collective priority. Let us protect our historical recordings, document our cultural traditions, support our archives, and use technology responsibly to keep our memories alive.

May the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage inspire us to appreciate the past, preserve our stories, and build a future in which our cultural memories continue to inform, educate, and unite humanity.

Thank you for your attention.

Happy World Day for Audiovisual Heritage!

Let us preserve our audiovisual heritage today, so that tomorrow's generations can hear our voices, see our stories, and understand our history.
